Gonio Fortress: Historical Overview
Gonio Fortress is a fascinating place in Adjara that unveils the veil of the past. Travelers can learn more about the cultural heritage of their ancestors here.
The history of the fortress dates back to the 1st century AD. The territory belonged to the Roman Empire and was a city of Colchis.
Later, the lands became the property of Byzantium. The territory was known as Aspārunte or Apsaros. The name Gonio was given to the city in the 14th century.
During the Roman rule, the fortress was a valuable stronghold for the entire empire. It served crucial functions, not only as the center of the Eastern part of Rome but also as a guardian of the river gorge entrances.
Architecture of the Fortress
Gonio Fortress is one of the oldest structures in Georgia.
The territory of the fortress is still full of mysteries, and ongoing archaeological excavations take place here. The discoveries are immediately handed over to the museum located near the fortress.
In the late 20th century, archaeologists made a surprising find on the fortress grounds—a treasure dating back to the 5th century AD. This proves that the Romans left a rich legacy that is yet to be fully explored. In 1994, the fortress was declared a museum-reserve.
The fortress has a rectangular shape and is protected by high five-meter walls. The defensive function is also performed by towers, of which eighteen remain out of twenty-two.
Territory of the Fortress
Access to the fortress is possible only through the remaining intact entrance, which can be seen from the road. Inside the fortress, there is plenty of space. You will see a territory divided into two parts by an alley. Along the alley, there are flowers, trees, and benches. Start on the right side, as it will show you many interesting ancient ruins.
You will be able to see:
- Ancient sections of the pipeline and sewage system made of ceramic pipes.
- On the right side of the alley, there are also ruined baths and a well.
- Many years ago, there was a hippodrome and a theater here. Unfortunately, only their foundations remain.
