The waterfall and the statue of St. Andrew in Batumi

We will tell you about the unusually beautiful sight of Batumi, as well as how you can get to it.

When visiting Georgia, most tourists head to the sea as their first destination. After enjoying the cool breeze and gentle sun on the beaches of Batumi, you'll likely want to feast your eyes on something beautiful. Embark on a journey to the statue and waterfall of St. Andrew the First-Called - it's close by and affordable, and along the way, you can visit a couple of other attractions.

Informational Guide

The statue was presented to the public in 2008. The unveiling ceremony was attended by the presidents of Georgia and Ukraine. The monument, located near the waterfall, symbolizes St. Andrew the First-Called, the first apostle. He traveled the world, spreading Christianity among the people. He also visited Georgia, where it is said that he built a church, becoming the first Christian house of prayer in the country. Unfortunately, St. Andrew the First-Called was not able to spread his faith to all corners of Georgia (that task was accomplished by St. Nino), but he performed many godly deeds.

Not far from the waterfall, you will see a sign with text in Georgian and English: "The Path through Georgia - the path of enlightenment. The project is dedicated to the arrival of St. Andrew the First-Called in Georgia."

The waterfall itself is incredibly beautiful, and the statue next to it is very remarkable. Be sure to take a photo against the backdrop of the statue - the pictures will turn out bright and unusual. The waterfall is located near the road facing the sea, where the water flows into it.

How to get there

The waterfall is located on the road to Sarpi, very close to the Georgian-Turkish border, just 12 kilometers from Batumi.

The best way to visit the waterfall is as part of a tour. For example, we recommend choosing a Mountain Adjara tour. It’s quite affordable — only 159 EUR. The price includes a full day of mountain exploration.

You can also get to the waterfall:

  • By minibus (marshrutka) — look for a vehicle with “Sarpi” written on the windshield. The fare is 2 GEL.

  • By bus — bus No. 16 goes to the waterfall. You can board it at Tbilisi Square. It follows Chavchavadze Street to Tbel Abuseridze. The fare is 1 GEL.

  • You can also take a minibus to Gonio, enjoy a walk around the Gonio Fortress, and then catch another minibus to Sarpi.

  • A taxi will cost you about 30 GEL round trip.

  • A good option is to rent a car or bicycle. In that case, you’ll need a map. Travel time is 35–40 minutes. Enjoy the stunning views along the way.

  • Walking is not the best option: you won’t enjoy the experience, as the road is heavily trafficked with trucks heading to Turkey.
